If you happened to visit the Pennsylvania state capital recently, you may have been surprised to find a large cannabis leaf flag flying high over the building’s main entrance. It’s a particularly jarring sight considering that police in Pennsylvania made 21,789 arrests in 2019 for cannabis possession, and show no signs of stopping—because Republicans in control of the state legislature continue to block every attempt to enter the world of legal weed. That explains why Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman has taken to letting his freak flag fly, specifically from the balcony of his second floor office in the capital building. He made his…

On Monday, the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) published a wide-ranging report offering insight into the purchasing patterns of Ontario cannabis consumers.  The data covers all legal sales across the province from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020. A few licensed producers and product categories emerged as leaders and we’ve covered them here. But it wasn’t all roses and sunshine. The report highlighted several areas still of concern for the fledgling industry. These are some of the losers from the important initial report. The OCS   The provincial wholesaler continues to evolve in its scope and approach, which is good news, but more improvements are needed as more than…

  • Combining cannabis with psychedelic mushrooms: Recipe for mind expansion or a bad trip?

    Mushrooms-colorful-light.jpg

It’s not uncommon to find cannabis consumers who also use psychoactive mushrooms, and vice versa. The internet is full of articles about self-administering psilocybin and marijuana together, with anecdotal reports from people who perceive an enhanced effect from the combination. People have combined the two compounds for decades—if not centuries. One 2006 study that looked into polysubstance use among university students found that of the 149 students surveyed, nearly 60% regularly co-administered cannabis and psilocybin (the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms). That co-administration remained mostly limited to the experimentation of younger adults, though, until recently. In the past few years, mainstream interest in psilocybin has exploded,…

When actor Seth Rogen was growing up and smoking cannabis in Vancouver, he recalls there was a constant cloud of shame around the substance that still lingers. “I smoke weed all day and every day and have for 20 years … For me, it’s like glasses or shoes. It’s something I need to navigate my life,” Rogen, the star of comedic hits like “Superbad” and “Pineapple Express,” told The Canadian Press over a video call on Thursday. “People have tried to make me feel shame about it over the years or have tried to make me seem like I’m weak or stupid…

Author: James M | | Categories: Cannabis , Cannabis Legalization

    cannabis ontario.jpg

Canada’s legal marijuana industry is celebrating a jump in sales, more brick-and-mortar stores and competitive pricing as it celebrates two years in business. Since Canada legalized recreational marijuana on Oct. 17, 2018, legal sellers and producers have struggled to compete with the black market, but there have been recent gains in the licensed industry. The change? The coronavirus pandemic, says retail marketing expert David Soberman. “It’s been a boon for the legal industry,” said Soberman, a professor of marketing at the University of Toronto.  In July, licensed marijuana stores sold more than $231 million in product — a 15-per cent increase from June’s sales —…

Medical cannabis programs across the United States vary on a range of legislative points. Without any federal allowances in place, states are left to choose their own regulations, leaving patients in varying circumstances depending on where they reside in the country.  The current situation affects medical patients from the moment they register for the program to their everyday dealings as an eventual license holder. One of the earliest, and most apparent, examples a prospective patient may encounter occurs when attempting to qualify for the program itself. While some states allow for a wide range of conditions under its medical program, others remain restrictive,…

  • Good News for Cannabis Operators Seeking Capital

    35 Blog Post.jpg

While the cannabis industry has seen its fair share of ups and downs, the industry continues to be an exciting space for consumers, players in the industry and the country as a whole. Because cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, and traditional banking products and services are unavailable to cannabis operators, they are left to navigate the capital markets in a different way. The three options for a cannabis operator to obtain capital is through debt, company equity, and real estate. This isn’t all that different from any other company, but the scarcity of capital and unfavorable terms makes it much different.…

    Blog Post 21.jpg

Dear Joe Biden, Congratulations! You’ve officially chosen a running mate who—despite previously opposing cannabis—is now fully on board with federal legalization. There’s still time for you to make a similar evolution, by repenting for your past sins as one of the nation’s leading drug warriors, and then quickly pivoting to embrace legalization— an incredibly popular policy (supported by 67% of all Americans) that would vastly improve the country while greatly increasing your chances of getting elected.   According to your policy director, the only reason you haven’t backed national cannabis legalization already is a perceived “lack of data.” “As science ends up with more conclusive evidence regarding the…
